Lufthansa has canceled 895 flights scheduled for Wednesday from six German airports as government workers call strike in the short term in wage discussions before the end of this week period.
The airline said Tuesday its hubs in Munich and Frankfurt would further interruptions. Some 87,000 passengers would be affected due the strike.
It is expected that public sector workers who perform ground handling and security checks to quit work before wage talks Thursday with the government. The ver.di union (union worker) is seeking 6 percent of wage increment of its 2 million members, Lufthansa, which is not part of the negotiations, deployed practices used during strikes by its own employees to avoid long lines and chaos at airports. Flights before the start of the strike was canceled and urged passengers to check their flight status on Lufthansa official website LH.com.
Passengers with mobility limitations were warned staff to help them get through the airport would be limited and should consider re-booking with free of charge. Because of the canceled flights, 545 flights were to or from Munich, where the strike would last all day long. All intercontinental flights departing from or arriving were not canceled for Wednesday, the company said in its official press release.
Most international flights operate from Frankfurt, where the strike period would be from 4:30 am to 3 pm, local time. Flights within Germany or Europe, but Frankfurt was largely canceled.
Other affected airports are Duesseldorf, Cologne-Bonn, Dortmund and Hanover. Strikes are taking place on Tuesday in places like kindergartens and swimming pools. Many public services in Munich were also affected.
